Though we may think of the olden days in black and white, the past was just as vivid as the present, full of vivid hues including blue skies, green grass and, well, people that don’t look as though they were ripped from an I Love Lucy rerun.
Contrary to their popular depiction — one largely informed by the popularity of color photography, which wasn’t commonly used until the mid-20th century — famous events and famous figures all existed on a spectrum of ROY G. BIV.
From Winston Churchill to James Dean behind the scenes, here are 20 colorized photos proving the past was just as bright as the future.
